Infant and young child feeding practices (IYCN)

Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) is a set of well-known, common and scientific recommendations for appropriate feeding of newborn and children under two years. The first two years of life provide a critical window of opportunity for ensuring children’s optimal growth and development through adoption of correct infant and child feeding practices. It is a known fact that stunting among Indian children attains peak at 24 months of age.

Good nutrition before birth, through the mother’s good health, and in the first years of life improves the child’s growth and the child’s ability to learn. Also, good nutrition helps prevent illness. Poorly nourished children do not grow well. They are shorter than other children of the same age. They are less interested in eating food and are often quite fussy. They are less active when they play and have less interest in exploring and learning.

Also, poorly nourished children are often sick. And illness is a special challenge for a body that is already weak from poor nutrition. Nearly half of the children who die from common childhood illness, diarrhoea, pneumonia, malaria, measles, and other infections—are poorly nourished. Helping young children get better nutrition helps prevent early illness.

To reduce childhood morbidity and mortality it is necessary to focus on avoiding malnutrition in children under the age of 2 years. Of all proven preventive health and nutrition interventions, Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices (IYCF) have the single greatest potential impact on child survival. Therefore, reduction of child mortality can be reached only when nutrition in early childhood and IYCF specifically are highly prioritised.

Appropriate nutrition during early life, coming mainly from adequate infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices, is essential for optimal growth and development. This Data Note describes the trends and patterns in key IYCF practices and food consumption patterns among children,
